Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do.  

My name is Georgia, I am a 24 year old fashion designer living in Brisbane, Australia. I’m passionate about slow fashion, minimalism, sustainability and ethics.

Why do you sew?

I have always loved being creative, and sewing has always been a way for me to express that. But over the years it’s definitely become more than that, it’s become a lifestyle that drives me to be more ethical, sustainable and minimal.

What do you like to listen to when you’re working (and why)?

I think I’m in the minority with this one, I actually don’t listen to anything when I’m working or sewing. I prefer to be in silence, I find it more peaceful and relaxing listening to my machine and the natural world around me.

Where is home and how does it affect what you do?

Home will always be where I grew up, a small town along the east coast of NSW. I loved living and growing up there, it’s like nothing else, but I don’t think without moving away I would’ve been able to appreciate all the small things. So that’s what I try to do now, I try my best to be more detail-oriented in the now and appreciate the little things that really make up a good life.

What was the first thing you ever remember making on your own? Tell us about this memory.

I remember trying to make a top by myself when I was probably around 9 or 10. I didn’t have a pattern, didn’t have any understanding about the shape, didn’t measure anything, so you can imagine how it turned out haha

How important is it to make something with your hands?

Making anything with my hands gives me such fulfilment. I am blessed to have found my skill and even more so blessed to have the ability to practice it day in and day out. My appreciation for handmade objects is through the roof! I know first hand how much time, skill, love and care goes into making a single garment, and it’s important to me that handmade objects get the praise they deserve.

What does success mean to you?

I’m not chasing the traditional idea of being “successful”. To me success isn’t the dream job or a certain amount of money in the bank. It’s about being happy with who I am, celebrating the small steps of growth, and reflecting on how far I’ve come. Simple.

What have you chosen to make out of FS linen and why?

From FS I chose the Antique White and the Potting Soil Linen, both in a middle weight softened finished. With a few modifications I used the FS Noa Linen Shirt Pattern to create a contrast/colour blocked t-shirt. I was inspired by a similar leather shirt I saw online and thought if I made it in a linen, it would be a staple in my wardrobe, so I brought it to life.
