The Winners of the Spring Fling Craft Contest!
The 1st place winner is Lynne with 924 votes!
"Heraldry’s modern equivalent is the college sweatshirt meeting the business card–something unique to you so you can be identified from a distance! This cotehardie is of the IL019 linen with appliquéd fleur-de-lis and hare. On the OTHER side of this dress is another whole pattern with greyhounds. His garment is a surcote, worn over armor for medieval martial arts combat. So fun to make, but even more fabulous to wear! I get to teach many people about my sewing when they ask about the clothing."
Congratulations Lynne, your works really show off your unique creativity and talent! You’ll be able to sew plenty more inspirational linen designs with your $250 prize to spend at Fabrics-Store.com!

Wendy with 315 votes"Spring is the start of fighting season. Rapier fighters slough off the winter by getting outside for duels and small unit combat. This is a heraldic cote made from several layers of medium weight linen, in black, potting soil, taxicab, white, crimson, natural and orange."

April with 279 votes"I wanted something different to wear to Ren Faires and SCA events (I’m a musician in a band, the Tulstin Troubadours), so I chose 15th century Flemish for its unique look and comfort. This outfit is very versatile! If it’s hot, I can wear just the smock and the blue kirtle, and if it’s cold, I can add the two layer overdress and tie-on sleeves. The entire overdress is lined, so I can tuck up the skirt to show off the yellow. My band’s colors are green, blue, and gold, so I used IL020 Bleached for the smock and the partlet, IL019 Cobalt for the kirtle, and 4C22 in Emerald and Autumn Gold for the overdress. The tie-on sleeves are reversible IL019 Cobalt and 4C22 Emerald, which makes for nice contrasting cuffs when I roll them up. The partlet was made completely by hand, and the back of both the kirtle and overdress were pleated using double box pleats to provide extra poof without using a bumroll."

The garb that your patrons make is beautiful. It is obvious that a lot of time, care and talent has gone into crafting period clothing. As a Renaissance Festival retiree & veteran of 12+ years, I appreciate the availability of quality ‘authentic’ fibers at a good price.
Since the vast majority of linen that I wear (and cherish) is everyday wear, might I suggest that you run another contest or start a gallery on your website featuring folks who are using your linen for regular, everyday apparel or possibly ArtWear that is of the 21st Century vintage? Based on other comments, I think this would appeal to a fair amount of your customers or would-be customers.
Here’s my ‘everyday wear’ testimonial. I work with silks but when I lived on Key West, I fell in love with linen for warm/hot weather apparel. I now wear it year round and have become a bit of a natural fiber snob. Give me my silks, linens and woolens (I live in SD now so wool is a necessity!) and I am a very, very happy camper!
Thanks for considering my request.

PS – I also second Terri Sue’s motion of not involving FaceBook in this, if at all possible. The simpler I can keep FB, the better. And I’d much rather come to your blog! 🙂

i wish that there had been some winners of modern clothes. i love linen to wear for everyday that is what i buy it for from your store. unfortunately i was not able to vote or see any of the contestants. i do not have facebook. i do not plan on getting facebook. these days though people just assume you have it. you are penalized if you don’t. i would have liked to have seen if there was anything but costumes. i would have voted for it.

I see lots of fabrics I would love to work with! I, like one of the fellow seamstresses, am a little “set back” by the shipping costs. I would like to try many of the doggie bag and special fabrics, but the shipping is high.
I would like to thank the participants who took their time and shared their wonderful garment items with us. Costumes are only one of the uses for natural, beautiful linens. What a thing to say! This is a great source for their fabric!
I have plans to use these fabrics for many items in my store.
Thanks for giving ideas on what can be made. I sew professionally and my customers are always asking for ideas. I will be recommending these linens; but since many of them are on limited incomes, I know the shipping will make them think twice before buying.

I am not big into costumes. It makes me not want to use your linen because I don’t like costumes.
Krislyn Dillard
Oh. They are all costumes. While they are very nice I was hoping for more crafts to get some ideas from. Still love your linen. 🙂 Let me know if you ever get any 5.30 oz or heavier in longer widths then 58inches. FYI for painters: linen is awesome for oil and acrylic.

I was surprised all were costumes- although I expect for accuracy your business is definitely the place to go. I have read the comments above and agree will all– very glad the swatch sheet was postage free- I wish it had more colors on it— light blues seem to be off color on site versus colors I have ordered- more than a dye lot- thanks for all the patterning ideas- I hope to get stitching soon- and yes postage is a bit high given other sites- $5.00 for up to 11 yards cotton or 4 yards flannel(closer to linen)-FYI Thank you- Glad I found your site-J

I also enjoyed seeing the winners, the costumes were fantastic! Sadly, I was never able to see more than a couple of the entries. Everytime I went to the site, I had to “like” on Facebook. I have a Facebook page but don’t keep up with it at all, and I didn’t like having to “like” everytime I wanted to see the entries.
I will try to enter next year. I mostly make regular, daily wear clothing and children’s clothes.

I enjoyed seeing the entries and love the winners, you did a great job. I will enter next year. Sara

Wow! Great job! Do people only submit costumes? I’d like to enter, but I make clothes, regular daily wear clothes, mostly childrens?
Krystal Hallman
I tried placing an order online and the only shipping choice available was priority shipping at a WHOPPINGLY HIGH rate. I would LOVE to order fabrics from you. Is this the ONLY choice for shipping? Just regular ol’ mail would be great; I could order more often. Thx.

I didnt know clothing was a CRAFT. I thought it was clothing. Why didnt you advertise the constest as “anything made from our linen”. I use your linen for my renenactment garb and find it satisfying to work with when making my CRAFTY? clothing.
