Seven of My Favorite Patterns for Sewing with Linen
Since I am such a fan of linen, its benefits and natural properties plus the look and feel of this beautiful fabric, this is an easy list to share with all of you. I hope you enjoy it and I hope you feel inspired to get sewing. Here are my favorite patterns to sew with linen. I’ll also share the size offerings in US sizing.
1. The Zina Linen Shirt and Shirt Dress- Fabrics-store
An absolute staple pattern to have on hand. My daughters and I have numerous button-up shirts from this pattern and I have two dresses. For layers, beach cover-ups or to wear alone, you will love this one and will need it in all the colors. Available in sizes 0-30
2. The Akira Wrap and Pants- Fabrics-store
This is a super comfortable high end lounge wear set or you could dress the set up with low heels and jewelry. Either way, this is perfection in linen. I’ve made this pattern twice and am planning a third. Available in sizes 2-24
3. Whitney Pants- Ma Ma Osa original pattern
Super comfy elastic waist pant pattern can be used for shorts, crop pants, and full length pants. You could even widen the legs for a more flowy pant leg. I really enjoy linen pants and linen shorts in many seasons here in Florida, mostly paired with a tank or a simple t-shirt. I love the exterior pocket detail or you could hide them in the side seams. Since this is a smaller start up company this pattern is available in sizes XS to XL. If you need additional size options the Akira Pants would work great.
4. A three tier dress- Self Draft
This dress is in a wheat color and I wear it so often. It was self-drafted but you could achieve a similar look with either the FS Rhea Tiered Sundress (shorten the top layer end under the bust line) or try a well rated pattern from Etsy like this. This style is just so breezy and comfortable all summer long. I endorse the plan to make one or more of these! Size offerings are generous on both of these patterns.
5. Bebe Osa Jumper – Ma Ma Osa
If you follow Ma Ma Osa, you know I LOVE babies and toddlers in linen as well. The natural qualities of linen are just so ideal against your baby’s skin and you can trust that it’s breathable and cozy for the little ones too. So my favorite baby pattern to make for family and friends is this little overall or jumper pattern. There is even a video to show the steps and make sure your little outfit turns out just right. Size 0-3 to 24 months.
6. A Linen Apron! – Ma Ma Osa
This is a great use for the heavier weight linen especially the Mixed Natural. Gardening, cooking, painting – any sort of work you enjoy. It’s just so lovely to put on an apron that breathes well and makes you feel like you have a special piece to work in. The apron would also make a great gift and could be paired with little tools for whatever your loved one enjoys working with. The apron is a “one size fits most” but the straps can be lengthened to offer more sizing,
7. Redesigned Wrap Dress- Vogue Pattern 9251
My all time favorite sewing pattern for linen has to be a wrap dress pattern I redesigned. I get so many questions about this dress from photos and when I wear it. The pattern was redesigned from Vogue Pattern 9251. I started working on the redesign of this pattern a while back but never released it. For my custom dress I altered the bodice to make it sleeveless with tiny straps, altered the darts to come up from the waistline and altered the length of the skirt/ changed a little of the curve as well. Until Ma Ma Osa’s releases, you could use the Vogue pattern which is offered in size 2-24.
Bonus: Get really inspired and try linen with an unexpected structure. This green bridesmaid dress that was self drafted for my daughter Amanda with its boning, keyhole center at the midriff and puff sleeves was just so much fun and she felt so beautiful in it.
