What Does the FS Riva Trouser and Zara Gingham Bedding Have in Common?
The Riva Trousers are such a classic cut. They are a straight leg design with a mid-rise height. I have made them before exclusively in linen, both the shorts style and full length style. I’ve even sewn them for commissioned projects for dear friends. So this FS Premium Pattern has gotten its use for sure. But the Riva Trouser I want to share with you today is a little outside the box. Maybe even a lot outside the box for some.
While watching a video from another sewist the other day, the idea was posed that you could find fabric with great and unusual prints in the Zara.com Home Sale Section. If purchasing a flat sheet or duvet cover, it could work out to be a great price per yard (or meter). The same principle works with any store’s bedding sale section. Maybe you’ve even done this before, repurposing your own linens at home. It’s not a new idea but I just don’t think to reach for bedding when planning my projects. You just need to find the fibers that interest you and read the full descriptions or reviews. I always want linen, cotton, wool, silk- all the natural fibers! When I started my search, I found a great deal on 100% cotton queen size gingham duvet.
I’ve had gingham trousers or even gingham elastic waist pants on my Pinterest Inspo boards for a while so I was super excited to make these. To be honest I was so hesitant to cut into this lovely duvet cover once I was holding it. Ha! Holding it next to all the beds in my house just to be sure I was willing but then I went for it! Washed, dried, and laid out the FS Riva Pattern pieces on this lovely gingham and then cut out what ended up being such a small amount of this duvet. I even made the legs a wider cut. I can make many more projects! Dress, shorts, pants for kids, a matching top for the Riva pants… I have a list of ideas! Nothing will be wasted.
Here is the finished garment. They are lightweight cotton pants that are perfect for Florida temperatures and pair well with the “t-shirt, gingham pants and Sambas” style I had pinned on my “Cotton Pieces” Pinterest board. Now to make a cute yellow and white necklace to accessorize.
