Pattern Review: A Robe That Feels Like A Gentle Hug
There are certain garments that I never intended to sew myself. We all have them- the “no fly” zone of patterns. For some, it’s bathing suits or basic tee’s. For me…it is athletic clothing or loungewear… like a bathrobe. But here I am – sharing my completed robe experience! I recently made the Capucine Robe, sewn in the IS010 Waffle Pebble fabric from The Fabrics Store. Spoiler alert: it’s a game-changer.
When I first saw the Capucine pattern, I thought, “Finally, a robe that doesn’t look like it belongs in a hospital.” As part of a three-part pattern bundle, I had already made the pajamas as a gift for my mom. So only the robe was left. The design is effortlessly stylish, with a relaxed fit that’s perfect for lounging. The IS010 Waffle Pebble fabric, a blend of 54% linen and 46% cotton, adds a unique texture that takes this robe from basic to luxurious.
Let’s talk fabric. The IS010 Waffle Pebble fabric arrives looking like any standard fabric…unassuming of any transformation; but after its first wash, it becomes a plush, dimensional waffle texture. It’s like magic, but with laundry. This fabric is not only visually appealing but also incredibly soft and cozy. Just a heads-up: it shrinks quite a bit in width and length, so buying a bit extra and pre-washing is non-negotiable unless you’re into surprises.
Sewing the Capucine pattern was refreshingly straightforward. The instructions were clear, which is always a win. Pro tip: use a serger for the shoulder seams and sleeve attachments if you have one. It makes the construction sturdier and gives a neat finish. No serger? No problem. A zigzag stitch works just fine.
The robe features side slits, a thick robe tie, and curved pockets, adding both functionality and style. I decided to skip the bias tape edge for the neck facing and instead finished the raw edges on my serger before attaching it down. This tweak made the finishing process quicker and cleaner. Efficiency is key, right? I added side loops so that the tie can sit easily on the robe when I am not wearing it.
The fit of the Capucine robe is oversized and relaxed, making it perfect for those lazy Sundays or work-from-home days when you want to look put-together but feel like you’re still in bed. I made the mistake of not ordering enough material, so I shortened the length by about 12”- which works for my 5’ 4” frame! Crisis averted.
The IS010 Waffle Pebble fabric feels like a gentle hug, providing warmth without being too heavy. It’s like wrapping yourself in a soft, textured cloud. Ideal for those chilly LA mornings (yes, they exist).
The Capucine Pattern – Robe view in IS010 Waffle Pebble fabric is a project I highly recommend. The pattern is well-designed, and the fabric adds a luxurious touch that makes the robe feel extra special. Bonus- use the excess material to make washcloths or reusable make-up remover wipes. Simply cut into your preferred size and finish the edges!
