Bold, Bright and Beautiful: Birthday Outfit in Disco Peach

Disco, baby! I love a good theme, I love the idea of making a birthday outfit, however, it couldn’t be just another birthday outfit. There is a concert benefit that I am going to that is disco themed. I knew that I wanted to use disco as inspiration for my birthday outfit. As challenging as it is sewing and styling can be a great way to shake up the creative juices. After spending time researching the disco era and Studio 54 images, I decided to focus on fringe, halters, and color.  The bright color line that Fabrics-Store has released this year fit the bill. Plus, I wanted to do a more modern take by keeping the outfit monochromatic.

I was immediately drawn to the Tangelo and Peach Pink that’s reminiscent of the bold paisley prints of the 70s but staying in the monochromatic lane. The colours also reminded me of Caitlyn’s series on dopamine dressing using another fabric in this range, called Love Bird. The colors scream summer and happy. It brings on the bold statement needed to balance the silhouette. Now was the time to investigate and decide what patterns to use.

There were a couple of ionic disco silhouettes. The short dress with platform shoes or a polyester jumpsuit with exaggerated lines or halter neckline. After looking through the inspiration, I wanted to go with a halter neckline and wide leg pants. The linen being a natural fiber made it a little bit more of a challenge with those looks unless you wanted to do a plain dress. I was excited to decide how to make the vision in my head work in linen.

As I started looking for halter top patterns, there wasn’t much choice on offer. A lot of the halter patterns out there have been made for knit patterns or they were not a true halter. It needed to have a dramatic back and gathering details around the neck. I finally landed on this vintage pattern that had been digitalized on Etsy. I ended up cropping the length a little bit and then adding two types of fringe, chainette and beaded, for a more dynamic look.

I knew that I wanted to be able to use the pants that I made for day-to-day wear. I decided the Tapioca Trousers would work. I like the construction because the pleats allow a lot of volume but are not exaggerated. Some patterns have pleats that are front and center. I wanted something that was a little more subtle but chic. With Tapioca the pattern construction is clean and perfect for the mid weigh linen. The pants ended up exactly the way that I wanted.

Now someone take me to the disco! I love getting the chance to dress up and I think the whole outfit together ended up matching the vision in my head. What do you think?
