PATTERN REVIEW: Julia Ensemble for Summer In Midweight Linen
Summer has finally arrived here in Vermont! I feel a bit better already with a bit of sun on my face and this lovely linen set to twirl in…
The JULIA wrap top and tiered skirt collection is a gorgeous duo to make. Both pieces are beginner friendly in their construction and infinitely wearable. For my fabric choice I used two shades of the Signature Finish linen from Fabrics-store in colors Lagoon and Kenya, which were perfect for this project in that they are soft, midweight, and opaque, with beautiful drape. This has been my favorite finish and weight of linen to work with and there are some new colors to chose from!
I love the sturdy paper of the printed pattern, the color-coded sizes which lend themselves to easy tracing, and the storage tube to keep the pattern in afterwards. After looking at the finished garment measurements on the size chart, I went for the smallest size in the blouse, and a 6 in the skirt. I loved all of the sleeve variations for the blouse and will definitely make a longer-sleeved version when I have the chance. The instructions are very clear and thorough, and I really love the yoke and gathering detail of the blouse. It feels a bit vintage to me, in the best way. The fit is relaxed and breezy. I chose to use a contrasting bias tape for finishing the neckline as I wanted a tiny pop of a print mixed in…the wrap closes with a button inside and then the outer bodice ties to the side with attached ties. I think it’s a great wrap pattern and very easy to style.
The tiered skirt is a simple and very satisfying sew. I opted for a lengthened two-tier version, where I kept the top tier as designed and then lengthened the second tier by several inches. (I’m 5’7″) There is a great color-blocked option for the three-tiered skirt and also sweet patch pockets included on the shorter length if you like. The gathering was easy in this linen, and I like the topstitching on the elasticized waistband as well. I am always impressed with the thoughtful details of these patterns.
I love these pieces together or separately and feel certain that I will get a lot of wear from both. I think they are celebratory but practical at the same time. Perfect for the warmer months. Highly recommend!
