Why I Love Linen for Babies
Linen for babies? 1000% yes. I’d love to share how I became so sure of this decision and show you something truly adorable.
If you’re reading articles from the thread often, you may already know the natural benefits of linen. If you’re new here, I’ll go ahead and share just a few of these benefits. Linen is a natural fiber and environmentally friendly; if you look into the process of making linen from flax, there is little to no waste. Linen does not cause skin irritation and is safe for all ages! Linen “breathes” which helps it keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter and also wicks moisture from the body. How wonderful for a baby who can’t tell you directly when they are comfortable or not. Linen has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. Linen is so very durable making it great for heirloom pieces! It is one of the strongest natural fibers and is dated as far back as ancient Egypt. Linen is also naturally insect repellent to creatures like moths. So if you’re putting in the time to sew a beautiful handmade garment, don’t all these benefits shout “perfect medium to sew with” to you? Well, they do to me and I’m excited to share my latest linen project with you.
My name is Alisha and I am the owner, designer and maker of my business called Ma Ma Osa. I’m a woman owned business that is fully run by a family with a variety of talents. Ma Ma Osa (Osa is Spanish for Bear) started when my adult daughters encouraged me to start selling garments similar to I was making for them and for other women in my life. My husband, adult son and my son in law also help in all kinds of technical ways. After years of sewing for the shop and my own family, I stepped into education. We worked together to offer an amazing digital sewing course that continues to be available in my shop followed by a selection of sewing patterns. If I ask myself what started this passion for sewing all these years ago, it was certainly sewing for my babies! Sewing as a young mom, I found it so fun to make garments and costumes and playthings for my three beautiful babies and occasionally for myself. After all these years of developing my craft, I finally made two baby/toddler patterns. This was a future goal that is finally here!
The two new patterns I have to offer are a little overall/jumper with ties at the top and a dress with bloomers. The overalls or jumper works for baby boys and girls. You can make the original design for any child or you can add a little feminine flair by using my little ruffle details. I also created a little three-tiered dress with a bloomer diaper cover. So many women are wearing three-tiered dresses and I thought parents would love to see that on their little girls.
Another exciting bonus part of this new project is that there are quality video tutorials to show how to make these heirloom pieces every step of the way. The videos will be available through YouTube as additional instructions to what you receive in the written patterns. This was such a fun process that I hope to offer additional sewing videos in the future. Younger me would have really appreciated the extra help as I navigated learning to sew for my babies and myself.
All of these sweet outfits pictured are made with linen from fabric-store.com. This family owned fabric store has been so great to work with, in all of my endeavors with Ma Ma Osa and I hope you order their lovely linen for your projects. These are the best linen prices and such quality. I am confident that you will pass these quality linen baby garments down from sibling to sibling or cousin to cousin and can keep them in the family for years to come.

The smile that you are wearing in the picture with all the kiddos is by far my favorite – reminds me of our mom when she has all the grandkids surrounding her. Thank you for sharing these endearing outfits and those cute little people. Happy Thanksgiving!

What cute outfits and cute babies. I bet the linen is so comfortable for them to wear. So soft against their skin.
