Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do.  

My name is Bruna Masalin, I’m a home-educating, mom of three. I’m a branding photographer, based in Maryland USA. Currently learning how to sew!

I feel like I won the lottery because I married into a family of very talented seamstresses and master tailors. Liz Masalin is my mother-in-law and Kari Cameron is my husband’s aunt. They have been sewing clothes for over 20 years. My mother-in-law has been teaching me how to sew for the past three years, together we created Fern Clothing Co., where we feature our handmade clothing. Their hands are all over the pieces you’re featuring today. My sister-in-law and I have been picking out patterns, modifying designs and trying our hand on simpler styles.

Why do you sew?

I love to make my girls dresses, it’s a joy to have a piece I know they will always love and that will hold a special place in their memories.

What do you like to listen to when you’re working (and why)?

Lately, I’ve been listening to The Hunts, Beirut and Lumineers.

As a child, what was your first encounter and memory of beauty?

I used to admire nature and that’s how I started my passion for photography.

Where is home and how does it affect what you do?

Home is where my husbands and kids are, as long as they’re with me, I feel inspired to create. My personal brand exists because of them, so does my shop, they are the heart behind everything I create.

Name a book that you’ve recently read which inspired you and why?

Simplicity Parenting – It encouraged me to slow down, and to provide a simple childhood to my kids. By choosing a slower pace of life, I ended up choosing to invest my time in learning how to sew as well.

What was the first thing you ever remember making on your own? Tell us about this memory.

I used to make clothes for my dolls, then that sparked my interest for knitting. I will never forget the first scarf I made on my own. It was so loud! I chose a very bright pink color for the yarn, and once the scarf had been made, I had to wear it. It became part of my uniform for school for a while!

Who are your muses and inspiration?

I’m a Christian, so my biggest inspiration is Jesus J. He was a carpenter Himself and worked with His hands as well.

Do you have a community of crafters/ makers around you or do you find you are on your own?

I do! One of my best friends is an artist, she actually hand-painted the backdrop I use for my listings. I’m surrounded by folks that love everything handmade J It’s a special community. And I love it!

How important is it to make something with your hands?

It’s really important because it breaks the culture of fast-fashion. We live in a culture where being wasteful is part of life. When you create something special with your hands, it requires time and a lot of practice. You learn to appreciate your things more, when you realize how much thought goes into making something with your hands.

What does success mean to you?

I know this isn’t for everyone, but I believe success means raising kids that are kind, respectful and able to lead healthy lives when they become adults. Nurturing love within my family, loving my people well, that means success.
