Pattern Review: Dreaming of Sewing A Cozy Robe For Yourself? This Is It!
As someone who mostly sews garments for herself, I have for years now been in dire need of making myself a robe. The Capucine bathrobe not only fills this need for me, but it also offers the perfect combination of comfort and style, making it a versatile addition to my loungewear collection. I’m a big fan of lounging around at home and I fully plan to be wearing this whenever I can. So let’s get into the details!
The Capucine has a timeless robe silhouette with a unique and fun curved collar line. I would place this pattern somewhere between intermediate and advanced, with testing skills I’m already good at and strengthening me in other areas I could improve in. I surprisingly hadn’t sewn a pattern with flat felled seams before and it was a joy to learn those. The inside of my robe is stunning due to them! The construction of the collar and the neckline was a bit tricky, but I was able to refer to the blog posts that fabrics-store has to help with that. When I took the time to slow my brain down at moments, the instructions were thorough, precise, and easy to work through. The other thing that surprised me when sewing this was that I’ve never actually cut out and sewn with pattern pieces of this size and length! I think the longest I’ve sewn is pants patterns. So it was an adjustment to be handling such loooong pieces, especially when I was first cutting out the paper pattern. (Something to consider since this one was an odd thing I hadn’t even considered!)
I made a size 12, prioritizing my hip measurement when choosing my size. For reference, I’m a 38” bust, 31” waist, and 41” hip. I probably could have graded down to a 10 on my chest, but I’m pleased to have it be roomier since it’s a robe and I wanted more ease than usual. The measurement I usually have to add length to is the sleeves, but this time it fits perfectly on my arms, if not a little too long actually! If you have shorter arms and have the opposite problem of me, I’d recommend shortening the arms when cutting out your pieces.
I inadvertently chose the same color of linen, Terra, as the model in the pattern. It is the most stunning, cozy, luscious burnt orange you could ask for! And I love the way the color looks on my complexion. The way this robe feels on my body in this linen fabric is simply divine. I really wish everyone could have one and know this kind of luxury! It feels even more satisfying to have made it myself. It’s definitely my favorite make of 2025 so far, and I know it’ll be a keepsake for me.
Initially the pricing seemed high to me. But considering the fact that you essentially are getting three patterns together in the Capucine collection (the robe, pajama top, and pajama bottoms), the pricing is very comparable to other patterns on the market. This doesn’t even factor in the beautiful printed paper pattern you receive, along with the printed instruction booklet. I can’t tell you how much printing and piecing together pdf patterns is my least favorite part of the sewing process. This made it 10 times less difficult when it came to this part!
