PATTERN REVIEW: The Riva Pants in Heavyweight Linen
Adding a classic fitted trouser to your wardrobe is always a good decision. These pants definitely have all the details of a classic garment worth adding to your collection. I did not have any white pants and I’m so pleased to have added the Riva Pants to my fashion options. I hope you enjoy the finished product as much as I do.
Made with the 7.1oz Bleached Softened linen, they have a nice weight and aren’t overly transparent which is an important feature with white pants. Making them yourself with this pattern is an even better plan because you customize the fit and length. This design has the most lovely tailoring details at the back of the waist, the front pleats and even the belt loops. I typically wear a 2-4 so I made these in size 4 and feel rather satisfied with that choice.
Some of the details of the pattern are advanced level sewing. So be sure to read the instructions carefully and you will do amazing. I found the zipper instructions to be described differently than I have previously experienced. If you do not watch what you’re doing, you could sew the zipper or fly area shut completely. This may be spoken from experience and it’s ok to laugh a little here. So be careful with the steps or even search online for some video tutorials first if you’re a visual learner.
I made a couple stylistic changes. I chose to skip the welt pockets in the back. They are small so I couldn’t imagine actually using them. I do hope this doesn’t offend the pattern designer as I confirm, they are a lovely and quality addition to a classic trouser. With white pants, it is also nice to have nothing showing through on the backside. As you might notice, I also went for no cuffs on the hem, so I was able to cut away 3 3/4 inches and still have a 2 inch traditional hem. I love the wide leg and where the waist lands, it’s a very classic cut.
In these photos, the Riva Pants are paired with the Riva Top, a pattern I also reviewed and enjoyed! Both pieces will whisk you away to a resort or retreat this summer, even if just in your imagination.

Beautiful! and thank you for the review. I read both the pants and top review. I own the pattern, purchased before the pandemic, and have been reluctant to make it because it seems well beyond my skill set. However, one must face one’s fears occasionally. Reading useful reviews on making Riva have emboldened me to begin. It really is a beautiful pair of pants and the color combination is lovely.
