PATTERN REVIEW: FS Hana Midi Dress in Midweight Linen
I am a huge fan of a white linen dress, so this FS pattern instantly caught my eye. The cut and silhouette was a perfect mix of class and simplicity. As someone who adores a minimalist wardrobe with classic linen pieces, I was immediately drawn to it. What intrigued me the most was the structure of the design. It has a collar, dolman sleeves and a wrap skirt. These design features make the dress quite a versatile one.
The dress can be styled a few different ways. Here I have styled it quite casually, with rolled up sleeves. However I have plans to wear it to work with a simple heeled strap sandal, a tote and a belt. Because of the simple design, you can definitely add accessories to elevate the look if preferred.
I chose to make view B of the pattern which is a midi dress with 3/4 dolman sleeves – but there are so many other views you are able to create from one pattern. If you are creative, you can add further views to your collection by simply changing the sleeve or lengthening or shortening the skirt in almost all views. There is also a top and skirt version, which means you have the opportunity to mix and match with other pieces in your wardrobe.
I made a size 2 of the pattern with no modifications. I was in between sizes and I decided to go down a size due to the shape of the dress. If I was to make this dress again, I would shorten the bodice length slightly and lengthen the same measurement from the skirt pieces. This is a personal preference as this would ensure the waist ties sit at my natural waist. Other than that the fit was spot on!
At first glance, this pattern is best suited for an intermediate level sewist. It could be tricky for a beginner as the pattern involves some complex construction techniques. But don’t let this discourage you. I consider myself a confident-beginner and I was able to fully execute it. The trick is to read the instructions carefully, and also to match it with the illustrations in the booklet. I would recommend doing a mock up, but if you are impatient like me and despise making toiles, take your time with each step. It will be worth it – trust me!
It is also important to note that there is a fair bit of interfacing you need to work through but that gives the dress a lovely structure. So I would not recommend skipping these steps.
As always, FS has created a beautiful and classic pattern with Hana. Their selection of linen is similarly impressive. I used their All-purpose Bleached FS Signature Finish Medium Linen for this. I think this dress would be amazing even in a slightly heavier weight linen in your favourite colour.
Happy sewing!
