PATTERN REVIEW: Julia Ensemble In Mid and Lightweight Linen
Nothing beats an airy top and skirt combination on a hot summer day. Here in the Southern Hemisphere, as much as it pains me to admit, summer is very much over. But I decided to make the Julia pattern in anticipation of balmy days in six months..
I must first commend the FS team for the most spectacular pattern experience. This is the first time I am reviewing their patterns and I am so impressed with the packaging and the contents. The pattern contains everything from the paper pattern to a colored instruction booklet to a lovely hook to store them in. The quality is top notch.
The Julia pattern bundle offers a wrap top with three sleeve lengths and two skirt lengths with an option to add pockets.
I made the top in size 4 using Lightweight OPTIC WHITE Softened linen fabric and went for the sleeveless option (view C) for extra breathability. The top has some very interesting gathered detailing in the back yoke and front shoulders which makes the construction a lovely experience. This also allows it to be more roomy and comfortable. This is balanced out by the wrap style of the top that cinches in at the waist giving you shape.
I made the tiered skirt in View E, using the most amazing Midweight ALLURE Softened linen fabric in size 4. I omitted the patch pockets to reduce bulk but I think this would be a great feature if you are using a lightweight fabric. I also shortened the length of the skirt by 2.5cm as this was a more flattering length on me. I did not need to add any lining to the skirt. The construction of the skirt was very straightforward and quick. The top skirt tier is angled and I found this gave the skirt a very flattering finish.
I like to call this a good foundation pattern. It is a great advanced beginner-friendly pattern. In addition, it also provides you with a base to hack, alter and modify into a set that works for you. For example, you can shorten the bottom tier to make it a midi skirt or add volume to a sleeve to make a puff sleeve. You can also pair the set separately with jeans, shorts or a simple t-shirt to build on that holiday capsule wardrobe. I am looking forward to living in these comfy separates all summer long!

Lovely review.
“ I love sewing with mostly natural and cruelty-free fabrics. ”
Please, what do you mean, ‘mostly natural’? Is the fabric put through a chemical bath when softened? What does it mean, ‘mostly natural’?
Thank-you! Im a long-long-time customer.

Mary, the text you are quoting is the description of what fabrics Dee works with in her sewing practice, it is not reflective of our linen.
