Sewing Mat

If you enjoy hand sewing you may find this sewing mat/carrier really useful. It will make the ideal protective barrier if you rest your tools on a polished table. Then, when you’ve completed your work for the day, you can store all your sewing pieces in the pockets and transport them around with the neat little handles.

Materials

20″ x 57″ wide IL019 linen in Willow
2 pieces of 2″ x 15″ canvas for handles

To Make Your Pattern

Use squared dressmaker’s paper to make your pattern. To create a larger version then simply increase the size of the circles you use.
Draw one circle with a 14″ diameter and a second circle with a 13″ diameter.

Cutting Out

Place the larger circle on the linen and cut out twice, then place the smaller circle on the linen and cut out twice.

Steps To Sew

1. Take one larger circle and on the right side pin raw edges of handles in place. Position the handles on opposite sides of the circle. With right sides together pin then machine the two large circles together, incorporating the ends of the handles as you sew, and leaving an opening for turning.



2. Turn large circle to right side, close opening, pull out handles and press firmly.



3. With right sides together pin then machine the smaller circles together leaving an opening. Turn to right side and close opening. Fold in quarters and press firmly to create crease lines.



4. Pin the smaller circle onto the larger circle, and using the crease marks as guide lines, machine along each one to create pockets.



5. Fold mat in half (with pockets inside) and press firmly to create your carrier.
