Lazo Jumpsuit in FS Heavyweight Linen
When I first started sewing, the indie pattern world was a lot smaller—think elastic-waist pants, puffy sleeve tops, simple dresses, the occasional jeans and not much else. Fast forward to now, and we’re spoiled with choices, with new designs dropping practically every week. It’s exciting to see how far the home sewing community has come, but also a bit overwhelming with so many amazing designs out there.
Like many sewists, I’ve been swept up in the excitement, only to realize later that some makes didn’t really reflect my personal style or suit my everyday life. Over time, I’ve learned to focus on designers that truly work for my body and my wardrobe—and one style I’ve always had my eye on? A classic, button-front jumpsuit that’s easy to wear, versatile, and just polished enough while still feeling like secret pajamas.
Enter the Lazo Jumpsuit by Helen’s Closet. The second I saw it, I hit purchase. The design checks all my boxes: a relaxed-yet-polished silhouette, adjustable tie waist (wear it cinched or loose depending on the vibe), pants and shorts options, and it layers well in cooler weather—basically, a wardrobe workhorse.
I sewed a size 16, which matched my bust measurement perfectly. My hips are slightly smaller than the pattern’s sizing, but the relaxed fit made it a non-issue. Not a fan of v-necks, I made a quick and simple modification to a crew neckline by extending the front bodice piece and using a favorite tee as a guide. Highly recommend this hack if you’re looking for a little more coverage or just prefer a different neckline!
Now let’s talk fabric. I’ve been a loyal fan of FS 4C22 heavyweight linen for years, so it was a no-brainer for this project. I chose the Premier Natural Mix, a beautiful neutral shade that works across seasons. The fabric has just the right heft for the wide-leg silhouette with a lovely drape. It can feel a little heavy in extreme heat (hello, 100°+ Texas days), but the structure and durability make up for it.
Final thoughts? This pattern-fabric combo is a win. The Lazo Jumpsuit is thoughtfully drafted, easy to customize, can be dressed up or down and it has a great size range. Pair it with FS heavyweight linen, and you’ve got a chic, comfortable piece that can take you from summer to fall with ease.
I highly recommend both the pattern and the fabric. I already want to make another, maybe a shorts version!
