Fabric Review: Rue Coat in Botanical Cotton Poplin
A few years ago I stumbled upon a jacket by the company Flainer. A floral print quilted jacket, on a black background. I’ve been dreaming of this jacket for a while. When the Fabrics-Store created a glorious line of Cotton Poplin, in a print that exudes still life floral paintings à la Jan Davidsz de Heem, it was a perfect match.
The Cotton Poplin in Barbara Black has the most beautiful soft touch with a slight papery feel. The fabric is lightweight, however opaque enough that it doesn’t require lining.
I started out by washing the fabric in cold water and hanging to dry.
As my plan was to quilt the fabric, a second wash and dry would be needed to fluff up the quilting once finished.
To bring this botanical painting to life, I decided to make the Rue Coat by Spaghetti Western Sewing.
Sadie’s patterns are a favourite of mine. This was my second time sewing this pattern. I absolutely love the oversized shape, structure and cut the pattern gives.
I decided to omit the collar, lined the coat in striped fabric from my stash and pulled out the pops of green with lime bias tape.
As for sewing, I quilted each piece separately following the stripes of the lining fabric.
Once all the individual pieces were finished, I re-washed the fabric and machine dried to add a plush feel to the quilting.
The Cotton Poplin after quilting added the most beautiful structure and crisp feel to the garment.
I made a size 2XS in the pattern. The garment came together quickly. To finish off the coat, I added a coat loop to the inside as well as hand sewn snaps for the closure. Voilà! The coat is complete! I must admit, wearing the coat on the reverse striped side is quite trippy to the eye…haha! However, I absolutely love how the stripes compliment the vibrant floral design.
Although it is peak summer time here in Ontario, Canada, this coat will be the most perfect cosy garment to jump into Autumn in a few months time!
