Patchwork Baby Jacket Featuring Terra Linen
Last year I decided to prepare for a launch of a children’s line of clothing and this little jacket was the first piece I designed. As a huge fan and loyal customer of Fabrics-store, I had so many scrap pieces of linen and I didn’t want to waste a bit. This Terra linen played a major role in the designs. I would say that this color tone Terra perfectly embodies autumn colors for me but then … I think of beautiful plants flowing over the edges of terracotta pots in the summer and feel it would be selfish to keep this color for only the autumn months. But if we are allowing it to be very Autumnal, this color lent itself perfectly with the other tones I chose – Olive Branch, Angora and Apple Cinnamon. This linen is perfect for heirloom pieces to be cared for and handed down for generations.
I love sewing for babies. I love celebrating babies! The new family member, new life, new laughter, joy and even the adjustment that’s about to enter a home just makes me so happy. Children truly are a gift from the Lord. Even all the rough or challenging parts of raising children teach us so much about them as individuals and about ourselves. I’ve been through all the ages and stages and come out on the other side with three full grown wonderful adults so when I hear someone is expecting, I get very excited for them and usually want to create/ send a gift!
After making my first cotton quilt for my guest bedroom, I did a little research on how to quilt with linen. The biggest thing to note is the potential to unravel. Make sure you shorten your stitch length and you need to either give it a much more generous seam allowance (at least ½ inch/ 1.27cm) or if using the traditional ¼” seam allowance, you need to bind each seam by sewing with your serger (or overlocker). I would assume a nice tight zigzag stitch would also do the trick but the serger is very convenient and I have one so I happily use it often. I lined the jacket with a sweet cotton featuring forest creatures and floral which looks super cute with the Terra tone!
As we all know, sometimes there are detours in life. I planned to hire a team this summer to fulfill pre-orders for the jacket and the rest of the line. Instead, I only made a handful of these baby/toddler jackets for the fall and they are available to order now. The adorable little patchwork jackets take many hours to make so what you find on my website will be what we have for the season. Although my website is still under construction, this LINK will find the right place to order if you are interested. As always when I share my creations on the thread, I hope to inspire you to design your own pieces, especially something special like a quilted linen jacket to pass down for generations. If you don’t have the time or skills yet for this endeavor, I would enjoy knowing that one of my tiny linen pieces made it’s way to your collection.
*As always, I sew with 100% natural materials, especially linen and prewash and dry all fabrics to avoid shrinking. I hand sew each piece with quality and attention to detail in a professional and pet free environment.

Such a lovely outfit. Did you make the knit onesie under that jacket and the stuffed animal as well? So sweet…..
