PATTERN REVIEW: FS AKIRA Set in Heavyweight Linen
It is winter in Vermont as I write this. Skies are grey with occasional bursts of sunshine, and the ground is still frozen and will be for some time. It is a time for reflection, and for dreaming of warmer days ahead. I was looking for a pattern that would help me feel cared for and at ease; something I could lounge in or wear to the studio to work in, and maybe help me feel a little bit lovely…the AKIRA Pattern is all of those things and more.
The pattern arrives in a long tube, with the pages neatly rolled on sturdy paper. The sizes are color coded and easy to trace and I found the size charts true to size. A colorful book of instructions contains all you need for making the pattern and has very clear, easy to understand directions.
The pants were a simple and satisfying sew with thoughtful details: I love the topstitched pocket openings and elasticized-drawstring waist. I felt that the higher rise and the width of the leg were perfect (wide but not too wide) for easy and comfortable movement. I chose to make the full length for the pants but there is a capri length version included in the pattern as well.
For the top, I made the elegant cardigan in the shorter length, which still landed below my hips, and includes a graceful side-tie closure and roomy pockets. You can also choose a longer cardigan or a wrap top. I found the versatility of the pattern really pleasing and can imagine making all of the pieces included in the future.
I chose a heavyweight 100% linen in AUTUMN GOLD Softened for the fabric and fell completely in love. A pet peeve of mine is making linen pants that I adore but that can’t stand up the to wear and tear that I need from them. This linen has a slightly rustic feel (in the best way) and a beautiful drape.
I am delighted by the ensemble and appreciate that both pieces look great together or as separates: I can picture the cardigan as a beach coverup or luxurious robe and the pants being worn out and about or just to bring me joy while I am at home. And the vibrant golden color fills me with warmth and the promise of spring….

Your ensemble is gorgeous and, yes, the drape is beautiful. May I ask how you prepped the fabric before sewing
with it. What temp did you wash it and how did you dry it? I want my garments to drape as nicely as yours do.

Thank you kindly! I washed the linen in cold water on a delicate cycle, then dried it halfway on low. Then I air dried it the rest of the way and ironed on high heat. Hope that’s helpful!

Yes, that is very helpful. I have unbleached linen in a lighter weight and I want it to drape nicely, but not be too ‘see-through’. I plan to dye my garments after I make them and am gathering different methods of pre-washing and drying to acjieve the look I can see in my mind. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, I really appreciate that!
