Linen scarf with woollen tassels Tutorial
Certain textures work well together’ in the exact same manner certain foods compliment each other. In the next two weeks we are going to have a look at an open weave fabric IL041 we carry at fabrics-store.com. By adding some textures to this fabric, you can create very simple and yet effective additions to your own wardrobe, or giveaways to special friends. Fuzzy wool brings a well needed chic comfort feel to this rather simple looking fabric. And since you can never have too many scarves, let’s make a good looking scarf ladies and gents.
Materials:
Half a yard of IL041 Bleached
Some colourful Wool/ Alpaca Mix, I used 75% Wool 25% Alpaca by Rowan
Pins, Scissors, Needle, Sewing machine
Time: 5/6 hours (tassels are time consuming)
Difficulty:‘ Beginner
1/ Prewash your fabric. Tumble dry so that there’s still a little bit of moisture left in the fabric, it should look fluffy and feel soft to the touch.
2/ Cut your fabric to the right size- I halved a yard of fabric and used the whole length to make this scarf.
3/ Hem all four sides with a double turned ¼” hem. To do this, fold under each raw edge ¼” and press, then fold under another ¼” and press again.
4/ Stitch close to the folded edge around four sides, pivoting at each corner. This technique will make simple square corners.
5/ Grab your wool and a needle.’ (you might want to use a knitting needle for this)
6/ We will be working along the two short sides of the scarf. Lay the scarf the right way facing up.’ Put a strand on the needle. Going from right to left with your stitch, put the needle in- count 4 warp fibers and get the needle back out again. Make sure you don’t go through the fabric, if you want a clean finish on the back.’ Pull the thread through leaving the length your want your tassel to be. I made mine 4 inches long.
7/ Put your needle back through the first hole you made, make a loop around the top put it back in around the one on the right and pull it down. This makes a turkey knot.
8/ Step 4 warp fibers to the right, and repeat.
9/ Keep repeating until the very end of the side.
10/ You will be left with lots and lots of loops which you then have to cut through to get your tassels all nice and dangly. Like so:

Masha, Sorry but the wool is a fringe, not a tassel. A tassel consists of a bundle of threads.
Sure is cute though.
